Question by starah99: Would a court remove a child from the home for repeatedly contracting headlice?
Hello,
My child has contracted head lice yet again at school, this makes the fourth time this year. She has missed a good bit of school, not because of head lice, but because of illness. She has acute asthma and is always having trouble. She has missed a total of 22 hours of school because of the lice, but she has missed more than 14 days of school because of her asthma.
Most of the days she has missed relating to her asthma is when the school sends her home. For some reason they seem unable to deal with it. They have a registered nurse who I’m sure is capable of giving her the emergency inhaler I provided to the school. They still insist I take her from school, even though the inhaler provides relief almost instantly.
They have charged us with truancy, stating the reason she has missed school is only because of the head lice. The matter went to court and the judge signed off on the charges, which means they want to come and remove my child from the home.
Wouldn’t they be more interested in removing children who are abused or neglected? Isn’t head lice a small problem compared to that? Can they remove my daughter because she has missed 22 hours of school because of head lice?
I am not sure exactly what the judge said, as we weren’t there when he signed it. A Health and Family services worker did come to our house and looked around and asked us what exactly we were doing to get rid of it. I told her that we were vacuuming all the furniture, beds, couches, chairs, washing and drying all the bedding curtains, coats, backpacks, jackets, and hat in hot water. We have bagged up all the stuffed animals and set them outside. Everyone’s hair gets treated once then again in 7 days. I am not sure what else to do, as far as I know we have done everything possible to see that it doesn’t come back. They go months without getting the head lice, so I know we are not “keeping” it, as the school is saying.
We have not received assistance from the government to purchase and cleaning supplies.

Wow I sure hope that don’t remove her from your home I know for a fact that the asthma is suppose to excused by the school because mt kids have asthma and they miss a lot of school due to asthma as well, make sure her doctors let the school know of her medical condition, how as far as head lice I don’t think that they can remove your child from your home for that. They probably feel that since she misses so much school that there is neglect in the home, they will just come to your house and look around to make sure that the house is clean and that the environment is safe for your child. My sister is a case worker she she that you should have no worries.
